Lux Vide and Big Light Productions have joined forces to produce this television series about the rise of the Medici family and the Italian Renaissance, to be broadcast in Italy by RAI television.

The cast will include Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden (nominated at the SAG awards for Games of Thrones), with Hoffman in the role of the patriarch and founder of the dynasty, Giovanni De' Medici, and Madden in the role of Giovanni's son, Cosimo De' Medici.

The shooting has begun in Italy, for the first time ever in the historic locations that were the actual sites of many of the events in the story, which include Palazzo Vecchio, the Basilica di San Lorenzo and the Duomo in Florence. Director Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (The Pillars of the Earth, Battlestar Galactica) will direct all the episodes.

The series, made in collaboration with Rai Fiction and distributed by Wild Bunch TV, was created by the director and screenwriter Nicholas Meyer and the American author Frank Spotnitz, producer of the iconic series X Files. Spotnitz, who co-produced Medici with Luca and Matilde Bernabei, will be at the RomaFictionFest to present the series.
